24.....Hacksaw Redux - 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.

 One of the most unforgettable moments in the history of 24 was in Season 2 when Jack, wanting to prove his worth to a crime ring involved in a terrorist plot so that he can infiltrate it, kills someone who betrayed the bad guys and, in a casual almost bored voice, tells George, the head of CTU at the time, “I’m gonna need a hacksaw.” When Gredenko had his arm cut off so that the implanted tracking device would be useless in helping CTU following him, every long time 24 fan probably yelled that famous quote at the screen. It was only President Thomas Jefferson’s outright refusal to pay ransoms, an age-old practice, for our citizens-made-slaves that led to war and the capitulation of Algiers followed by Tunis, Tripoli and Morocco announcing that they too had officially abandoned slavery. Liberals in Congress should know this instructive history; perhaps they might learn something from it. I have to add, having spent 12 months over 2003 to 2005 in Iraq this is also the typical experience of all my Iraqi friends (of whom I am still in touch with more than a dozen in Baghdad alone).
